Ms Bita Manzouri is a consultant corneal and cataract surgeon and the immediate past lead for the Eye Casualty at Queen’s Hospital in Romford.
She graduated from University College London with a first-class honours intercalated degree in molecular biology and biochemistry, for which she was given the University of London medal, as well as distinctions in her medical degree.
Prior to entering ophthalmology, she undertook general medical training to obtain her MRCP. She underwent her ophthalmic training at The Western Eye Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital and undertook research leading to a PhD degree at the Institute of Ophthalmology. She has dual fellowship training in cornea/external disease and paediatric ophthalmology.
Ms Manzouri is the regional educational advisor for the North East Thames region. She is actively involved in cataract and corneal teaching to ophthalmologists, optometrists and other specialties affiliated with ophthalmology. She is regularly an invited speaker and trainer at both national and international meetings. She is a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire and a regular examiner for medical students at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. She is also a reviewer for several ophthalmic journals and has herself published widely and presented at both national and international meetings.
She holds a post graduate certificate in refractive surgery from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a post graduate diploma in cataract and refractive surgery from the University of Ulster. She has further postgraduate certification from the University of Manchester in healthcare management and leadership, as part of the Darzi fellowship programme. She is currently the Secretary to the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (UKISCRS).
Ms Manzouri also undertakes ophthalmic medicolegal work and she has the Bond Solon Expert Witness Certification from the University of Cardiff. She is on the UK Register of Expert Witnesses.
She is also passionate about providing ophthalmic care to those less priviledged. She has in the past been a volunteer at Crisis the Homeless Charity providing ophthalmic examinations and has undertaken a number of charitable missions abroad, notably to Cambodia (Khmer Sight Foundation) and Sri Lanka (Samanala Valley Foundation). She is a faculty volunteer for Orbis, the Flying Eye Hospital Charity, where she teaches cataract surgery and mentors ophthalmologists in less privileged countries.
